Southampton were formed in 1885 and became founder members of Division 3 in 1920.  They remained in this division until 1960 and finally made it to the top division 6 years later.  Here they remained for eight seasons before dropping back into division 2. However, 2 years later, Southampton won their first and only major trophy when, as a second division side, they beat Manchester Utd 1-0 in the 1976 FA Cup final.  By 1978 they were back in Division 1 and have remained ever since.

Their most successful league season came in 1984 when they finished as runners-up to Liverpool by a mere three points with a very young exciting team.
